Question 3: The 1995 Policy Review and Since

Canada is a member of many international organizations, including the G8, NATO, the Commonwealth, La Francophonie, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC), the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Arctic Council. Should our participation in any of these be strengthened, or adjusted?

Answer:
Canada's participation in all of these is important. The emergence of popular democracies in the other Americas may be short-lived without public support from Canada in the OAS. Participation in the Commonwealth is especially important with respect to affairs in Africa. Canada's effort in the G8 on behalf of that continent is the sort of initiative which must be undertaken in other parts of the world, if the three pillars are to be effective.
