our priorities should lie in the WATER, THE AIR, and the SOIL. our priority's should lie in the Quality of Our Renewable Resources. We can not sacrifice our Resources for the Economy, as is all to common among nations in the last century. Pursuing modern military technology is directly contrary to these proirities of maintaining the security of the Nation as its NATURE. SECURITY OF OUR NATURE (RESOURCES)MUST BE THE TOP PRIORITY. Our role should be actively breaking the dependence on fossil fuels. employing alt/sustainable technologies on a wide scale. and cease the destruction. we are talking about the security of our childrens children here
Canada should not join any Arms/Military Race, as this approach is largely fueled by Fear, and is also extremely costly and expensive to maintain any 'upper hand ' that might be attained some where in the distant future. We will not be a Superpower of the world, and we don't want to TRY to be either. OUR SUPREME STRENGTH will lie in our ability to Respect our Resources in a world desperate for an example of susatinable Living. We will not attract the attacks that America is attracting to itself, as long as we are respectful toward CREATION. Bigger Military does NOT imply more 'Security'. This is a huge fallacy of perception.
Has anyone ever observed a person in life who really seemed 'secure' in themselves? Were they 'Secure' because they had the rest of the playground quaking in Fear of them? No, in fact, the ones who went the route of struggling to outdo the other kids in a king of the hill fashion were only displaying their own 'INSECURITIES', as their own position of power was always attracting opposition(s). the People who really were 'Secure' didn't play into the Fear trip to begin with. They weren't busy threatening others. they went about doing what they knew was right and COMMANDED RESPECT from everybody because they were naturally concerned about the benefit of the whole, and acted HUMBLY, i.e. didn't try to claim all 'the power'. An important aspect of any Defense 'strategy'(which does not Exclude the maintainence of a responsible Military)is to NOT OFFEND. This doesn't mean 'kiss ass', this means, RESPECT OTHERS AND YOU WILL BE RESPECTED. All these Nations in the World today and they are all supposed to be pitted against each other. WHY IS THIS? WE DON'T NEED WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION TO MAINTAIN PEACE IN THE WORLD! We need to get the people around the world genuinely Excited on the Creative Solutions that will promote the wide-spread respect of our shared EARTH. We need to lead by example, and work to clean up our MESS. Who is going to attack the ones who are actively and publicly devoted to Cleaning up their own Mess?? rather than blatantly disrespecting the Earth in the name of 'Economic Freedom' or some other phrase disguised to sound like a 'good' thing. Our "Freedoms" should NOT extend into the Freedom to destroy and exploit our Resources, because this is counter productive and will bind us into slavery in the future.
as for the spread of infectious disease. we need to acknowledge the medical fact that TERRAIN IS EVERYTHING, and Germs in themselves are nothing to Fear. This means we need to educate our citizens to the principles of maintaining a healthy bodily terrain(i.e. a diet high in Alkalines, such as green leafy vegetables and sprouted grains and legumes, while cutting down on the acid-forming foods)We should actively promote the understanding of Nutritional Healing, acknowledging that Food can be medicine and it can be poison. PROMOTE PROPER EDUCATION ON ISSUES OF HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE
we should promote global security by upholding the UN and Declaration of Universal Human Rights, and also do our part by upholding the Resources that we are responsible for on our section of the Globe

Solardog says,"PROMOTE PROPER EDUCATION ON ISSUES OF HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE"...

I agree, these people need a healthy life style too. Why don't you put your efforts here first.

what can I(as one person) do for these thousands of people being tortured and killed in North Korea?? obviously NOTHING, which is the same thing any ONE person can possibly do for these people, under the thumb of a Military Dictatorship. What WE can do (those of us around the world who do NOT support what is being done to the North Koreans) is STOP IMPORTING THE NORTH KOREANS GOODS(as the article says, many are being made directly by these prisoners). well, then we'd be hurting the whole country of North Korea, and that's no solution, right?? OFCOURSE it's not a solution in itself. if there was any ONE SOLUTION, we'd have figured it out by now. This action of BOYCOTT is threatening to the North Korean Economy(one aspect of North Korea as a Nation) and from there WE can say that North Koreans will recieve no Exports either until Kim Jong releases these prisoners. This might be harsh to the people, but is dropping Bombs(and they'd be nuclear in this case)be a better approach???
we can wage WAR on North Korea, (which is also threatening to their whole country, as well as the world that is in the proximity of North Korea's nuclear retalitaion)and try to FORCE the OPPRESSION to stop, but we've already seen where this approach leads, and it DOESN't lead to FREEDOM
People resort to WAR like it's their SAVIOUR. nothing is FURTHER FROM the TRUTH, brothers and sisters. There are ALWAYS other ways of dealing with a situation than resorting to FORCE and VIOLENCE.
Yes, what we can Do is Educate our own people to the UNIVERSAL HUMAN RIGHTS(as set forth by the UN, Dec.10,1948- www.un.org/rights/50/decla.htm)because the more we promote this at home is the more it spreads to the global community.

I wasn't suggesting war in N. Korea at all. I was just hoping you had some new ideas on how to deal with the subject, since you have a vastly different perspective.

SolarDog says,"what can I(as one person) do for these thousands of people being tortured and killed in North Korea?? obviously NOTHING,"...

Have you considered a letter writing campaign to the captors at the Gulags through Amnesty international? Just to let them know someone is at least paying attention to what they are doing.... (If you really want to make them think, send satellite photos too)

P.S. Don't do this on your own, the best bet is to go through Amnesty or some other respected human rights group.
Just an idea. :)

If you think of any thing else that could be of practical help please post.
Thanks;
Steve

YES we need to VALUE DIVERSITY and the creative responses that might inspire the next person to add something to the puzzle. we can't find 'Peace' looking outside of ourselves or by means of force. 'Peace' doesn't mean 'No suffering or death', as we must know and accept. Rather than an idealists dream,'Peace' is more a byproduct of Justice(not to be confused with Revenge)so we need to encourage Awareness and Realization of our Universal Human Rights(UN Declaration, 1948)and we can Defeat our Enemies with Non-cooperation(cease all contact, economic or otherwise if need be) and still OFFER A PLACE AT OUR TABLE if they stop the oppression and tyranny of their own people, suppressing the UNIVERSAL HUMAN RIGHTS in their country. so we can't assume that we will ever achieve 'peace' if we create Injustice(war).
TODAY we 'see'(on the news) as 'everyone' in IRaq is parading and we're all saying to ourselves, well hey now that wasn't so bad, Saddam's days are out the door. Cheers! but in a year or two how's Life gonna be in Iraq? well there'll be plenty of Rebuilding of the Oil wells no doubt and any other institutions pertaining to the access of RESOURCES will be duly funded and seen to development, this is ofcourse, the Economic Freedom we are 'liberating' the world to(not Economic Responsibility though)And yeah in two years('best' case scenario) we might see a place that's 'Free' just like America, there'll be WalMarts and McDonalds(what do I know there probably already is) and the kids will go to school til they're eighteen (twenty two if they want to make any real money)and everyone will be working eight-plus hours a day, men and women alike, and there'll be video games and CABLE TELEVISION for everyone- aaahhhhhh. and best of all, the Economy will be 'saved' everywhere o), and people will be able to get anything they want or invent something new and if it sells, then welcome to the American Dream (all pot smokers will be arrested, naturally, and Guns will be indirectly accessible to every child) and the don't forget the War on Terrorism, which 'Might' be 'kinda different' as the US occupies a little chunk of land in the heart of the Middle East. Oh well(they seem to say), the American tax-payers can cover any expenses, now and in the future, not because they've proven to cover their expenses in the past(debt is on its way over a trillion, and its a forecasted two tril by 2010), but because our Creditors know "we're good for it". Welcome to FREEDOM everybody!

brought to you by the Republican Party

ok, um.. can I ask a question? what happened to planet Earth? can we bring around some sanity here? this is ridiculous, The USA as it is today is NOT some sort of 'model' Nation that we should be so happy is spreading over the globe. USA has the highest suicide rate and children killing their teachers and look at the percentage of imprisoned people? HOW can we pretend to forget that these things aren't going on in the Western World? The US has a LOT OF REFLECTION to do before it pushes its brand of "freedom" onto the rest of the World. The Internal Problems of the USA aren't just isolated to the USA, either. We are all so disconnected to our Earth(and have been even more so since WW2) in a very Real sense, and this is relatively new for Humans. We have all but forgotten Her(Mother Nature), and have all but 'decided' to seek out Her replacement in the conscious mind with Round-up Ready-Genetically Modified Seeds...oh, and WHO purifies the now toxic water?? WE DO!! (at the standard corporate Fee, of course)
this is the type of 'Economic Freedom' we have to look forward to in the World unless we reverse the Trends of Environmental Disrespect and Unresponsibility in our Capitalist Systems
There is a WAR underway on our Natural Resources and guess who's Losing. WE ARE! but guess who's winning? NO ONE! it's just a matter of HOW FAST we 'get it over with'(well these wars sure do speed it up, eh?) unless WE somehow can Do something about it. its up to everyone, not just the Government, though they 'could be' a motivating factor for positive change.
Im glad Canada is adopting the Kyoto Treaty, but it looks like BC Premier Campbell is selling the forests... we're still going uphill people, we've got a long way to go
