P2 Immigration musicians

I am the executive director of the Pacific Music Industry Association. We represent over 500 music industry companies and individuals in BC. Of particular concern to our members is the present immigration policy of the US in regard to musicians working in the USA on P-2 work visas. At present, the process is taking up to six months, unless artists are willing to pay $1000.00 USD to expedite the process to 15 days. As this payments does not guarantee success, this is a major impediment to working in the USA. The basic fact is that concert bookings are never booked that far in advance for most performers. It is my understanding that it is far easier for US artists to work in Canada. The spirit of parity between Canada and the US in regard to this cultural exchange is being flagrantly abused by the US. Historically, it was far easier to do business with the USA.

The process is seriously affecting cultural commerce between our countries. With Canada being the second largest exporter of music after the USA, this barrier needs to be broken down.

We would like foreign affairs to make parity with the US for achieving P-2 Visas a priority.

Yours truly,

Bob D'Eith
